Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Government College, Baloda, DistrictMahasamund, Chhattisgarh has a general unit of National Service Scheme since2013. Under this scheme, students have to do social service work in the villagestreets. After serving for 240 hours, one gets a B certificate from theuniversity. Under social service, labor donation, tree plantation, mohallaclass, cleanliness, blood donation, small savings, first aid etc. have to bedone. Special camps are also organized in which attendance is mandatory.
National Service Scheme was started by the Government ofIndia in the birth centenary year of Mahatma Gandhi on 24th September 1969 withthe intention that social responsibility, consciousness, self-motivateddiscipline along with respect for labor should arise in the students associatedwith higher education. Students should do social service to make good use oftheir free time and leisure and can also do interviews with real situations forthe completion of their education. So that their personality develops.
NationalService Scheme was started in Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh in 1969 in twouniversities of the state and at present it is being operated by all theuniversities of the state. Under this, a common unit is also operating in ourcollege in which 100 volunteers are registered every year. National ServiceScheme activities are conducted throughout the year by these volunteers like -Environment Promotion and Protection, Tree Plantation, Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao,Cashless Transactions, Digital India, Swachh Parisar-Harrier-Campus Rallies formass literacy/community consciousness, Voter awareness campaign, organizationof youth week, health education, first aid, save water, adopt cleanliness etc.Social service works are done.
Throughthe National Service Scheme, volunteers of the college are getting theopportunity of social service by participating in various activities and campsat the district level, divisional level, state level and national level and aremotivated towards creative and creative work, so that they can becomeduty-bound in future. To play an important role as a sensitive and usefulcitizen.
OBJECTIVES
Thebroad objectives of NSS are to:
I. Understandthe community in which they work.
II. Understand themselves in relation to theircommunity;
III. Identifythe needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem solvingprocess;
IV. Develop among themselves a sense of social andcivic responsibility; finding practical solution to individual and
V. Utilize their knowledge in community problems;
VI. Develop competence required for group livingand sharing of responsibilities;
VII. Gain skills in mobilizing communityparticipation;
VIII. Acquire leadership qualities and democraticattitude;
IX. Develop capacity to meet emergencies andnatural disasters and
X. Practice national integration and socialharmony.
MOTTO
The Motto of NSS "Not Me But You",reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for self-lessservice. NSS helps the students develop appreciation to other person's point ofview and also show consideration to '/other living beings. The philosophy ofthe NSS is well doctrined in this motto, which underlines/on the belief thatthe welfare .of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of thesociety on the whole and therefore, the NSS volunteers shall strive for thewell-being of the society.
SYMBOL
The symbol for the NSS has been based on the giant Rath Wheel ofthe world famous Konark Sun Temple (The Black Pagoda) situated in Orissa,India. The wheel portrays the cycle of creation, preservation and release andsignifies the movement in life across time and space, The symbol thus standsfor continuity as well as change and implies the continuous striving of NSS forsocial change.
BADGE
The NSS Symbol is embossed on the badge. Theeight bars in the wheel represent the 24 hours of a day. The red colourindicates that the volunteer is full of young blood that is lively, active,energetic and full of high spirit. The navy blue colour indicates the cosmos ofwhich the NSS is tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare ofthe mankind.
Certificate
NSS volunteer who has completed 240 hours ofregular activities in the period of 2 years and attended one annual specialcamp, will be issued an cate by the respective university NSS certificate.
SPECIALCAMPING PROGRAMME
Special Campingforms an integral part of National Service Scheme. It has special appeal to theyouth as it provides unique opportunities to the students for group living,collective experience sharing and constant interaction with community.Concerted efforts have to be made for a number of years for reconstructionactivities in rural areas and urban slums for improving the living conditionsof economically and socially weaker sections of the community. Institutionshaving NSS have a special role to play in collaboration with other Departmentsand local authorities engaged in Development work. They should adopt a villageor group of villages/urban slums for intensive social development, wherespecial camps are organised by them year after year to create tangible and durablecommunity assets.
Scheduleof a Day in a Special Camp:
Waking Up 05: 00 Hrs.
Morning Assembly and Physical Exercises,Yoga 06:00 Hrs. to 08:00 Hrs.
Break Fast and Collection of tools etc. 08:00 Hrs. to 09:00 Hrs.
